May 3rd 2012

OLYMPIA – Gov. Chris Gregoire today has made emergency funds available to the state Department of Health to help curb the epidemic of whooping cough (pertussis) underway in Washington. In addition, Gregoire is urging health care professionals to get vaccinated and vaccinate their patients, and she announced federal approval for health officials to re-direct some funds to buy several thousand doses of pertussis vaccine for adults.

May is stroke awareness month

If you think you may be experiencing a stroke:

Immediately call 9-1-1 or the emergency medical services (EMS) number so an ambulance (ideally with advanced life support) can be sent for you.

Also, check the time so you'll know when the first symptoms appeared. It's very important to take immediate action. If given within 3 hours of the start of symptoms, a clot-busting drug called tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) may reduce long-term disability for the most common type of stroke.

tPA is the only FDA-approved medication for the treatment of stroke within three hours of stroke symptom onset.

TIA or transient ischemic attack is a "warning stroke" or "mini-stroke" that produces stroke-like symptoms but no lasting damage. Recognizing and treating TIAs can reduce your risk of a major stroke.

The usual TIA symptoms are the same as those of stroke, only temporary. The short duration of these symptoms and lack of permanent brain injury is the main difference between TIA and stroke.

This is the 8th year of the annual Tonasket Freedom 5K.  From the beginning, its design was to be a non-competitive, family friendly event to encourage community participation and fun. The "Freedom 5k" … denotes everyone's "Freedom" to walk, jog, skip, or dance around the 3.1 mile course, no pressure, just participation & completion. The proceeds from this event go to fund the non-profit after school program, Girls on the Run.

Oroville high school student raises money for breast cancer

Daniela Ortega is a Senior at Oroville High School, and decided for her Senior Project she would put on a fundraiser to raise money for Breast Cancer. She wanted to do something that would benefit the community in more than one way, so Daniela combined her love of volleyball and and helping the community. She put together a volleyball game with a theme of "Tough Enough to Wear Pink". Not only was Daniella able to raise $103 to provide mammograms for the uninsured, she also brought breast cancer awareness to her local community. She made special bracelets for the spectators to wear in support, and donated to proceeds to North Valley Hospital. Daniela hopes that next year another Senior will carry on the tradition of fundraising for Breast Cancer and promoting awareness.

Budget Cuts Devastate Health Care Safety Net

The state budget makes dramatic cuts to Washington State's health care safety net and will cause real pain for vulnerable people and the health care providers who serve them. Hospitals will experience a major increase in demand for charity care and emergency room services, while enduring significant cuts in payments. The burden of these cuts will also fall on poor children, seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income workers. Middle-class workers who have private pay insurance will be affected as hospitals are forced to shift to them the cost of state underpayments.
